In the winter of 1997, in the remote taiga of Russia's Primorye region near the Chinese border, a poacher named Vladimir Markov shot and wounded a male Amur tiger in a dispute over a wild boar the tiger had killed. The tiger did not flee. He followed Markov's trail back to his isolated cabin, systematically destroyed the belongings that carried the man's scent, and then waited, patient and unseen, for Markov to come home. On December 3, he did.
That story, told in John Vaillant's acclaimed book The Tiger, reveals something we rarely credit to animals: memory, intent, and the discipline to wait. The Ambush captures that moment of stillness before action. A male Amur tiger lies pressed into the snow, his body nearly hidden, his gaze fixed and unblinking. He is not resting. He is watching.
