It gets its name from a Hindi word meaning "spotted animal”.  I once saw a large female cheetah rush into a herd of impala and quickly take one down. While recovering, she sat looking off into the distance with the sun’s dying light casting on the side of her face. If you are lucky enough to observe a cheetah successfully hunt, then you will most likely see that moment of vulnerability which proceeds immediately thereafter. For the triumphant cheetah there comes a moment of realization, admitting that the commotion was likely to be seen by opportunists. The cheetah will scour the horizon looking to see if it can feed in peace, all the while breathing deeply to pull oxygen back into its overheating muscles.
