Following his best-selling and award-winning books BEAST and KING OF BEASTS, John Banovich returns with GIANTS OF AFRICA – A Life Among Elephants, a magnificent celebration of one of the most extraordinary animals on Earth.
Featuring 208 large-format pages, this beautifully produced volume showcases more than 215 of Banovich's dramatic paintings and sketches, all dedicated to capturing the power, intelligence, character and majesty of Africa's great giants.
Banovich's fascination with elephants continues to grow after 70 visits to Africa, where he has studied these remarkable animals, occasionally in surprisingly up-close encounters. Those experiences have given him a deep appreciation for the elephant, not simply as the world's largest land animal, but as an intelligent, social and deeply compelling creature with an unmistakable presence.
In his remarkably realistic paintings, Banovich conveys the many faces of the African elephant, from massive, solitary bulls to closely bonded family herds led by experienced matriarchs. His images capture moments of strength, tenderness, curiosity and confrontation, offering an intimate glimpse into the lives of animals that have inspired legends, commanded worldwide respect and captivated generations. GIANTS OF AFRICA is more than a collection of wildlife art. It is a spectacular tribute to an extraordinary animal and an invitation to better understand the ancient giants that still roam Africa today.
