Where can you go to see that vast herds of wildlife stretch out as far as the eye can see? Today the only place to witness the greatest wildlife spectacle on earth is where northern Tanzania meets southern Kenya in the Serengeti Ecosystem. Over 1.5 million wildebeest make their annual journey north in May, June and July seeking better grazing with mineral rich grasses and fresh water due to the seasonal rains. Many gazelles and topi find themselves making this annual journey along with nearly 350,000 Burchell’s zebra joining the migration. Seeing these magnificent herds concentrated to the far away horizon is a sight to behold.
August and September finds the herds in the rich open plans of Kenya’s famed Masai Mara, where both my daughter’s names were inspired from, Siana 10 and Mara 8. In October they start making their way back south, across the border into Tanzania and reach the short grass plains by January or February where they give birth once again and start the whole cycle over. Their journey is riddled with challenges from crossing fast moving, crocodile infested rivers to a high concentration of lions and hyenas feasting on more than they could ever eat.
