John Banovich - Ad Infinitum

The Serengeti is a vast ecosystem and harbors one of the largest migrations on earth, the great wildebeest migration.  It is awe-inspiring to witness and has been going on for millions of years - ad infinitum.

With the exponential rise of the human population, wildlife migrations are finding themselves severely threatened.  Just a few decades ago the wildebeest migration would move through the western corridor in late June or early July and was estimated to lose nearly 250,000 animals to bushmeat poaching. Today, with a large amount of financial capital and the hard work by many people at the local, national and international level the migration numbers of wildebeest, zebra, Grant’s and Thompson’s gazelle have returned toward historic numbers. With plenty of prey for the large carnivores to survive on and perhaps with a forward-thinking Tanzania and Kenya administration and international support, it will go on ad infinitum.
